How Social Security Benefits Are Calculated
Your monthly retirement benefit is determined through a three-step process defined by the Social Security Administration. Each step builds on the previous one to produce your final payment amount.
Calculate AIME
Your highest 35 years of earnings are indexed for wage growth, summed, and divided by 420 months. This produces your Average Indexed Monthly Earnings (AIME).
Apply Bend Points
Your AIME is split across three brackets, each yielding a different replacement rate (90%, 32%, 15%). The sum is your Primary Insurance Amount (PIA) — your benefit at Full Retirement Age.
Adjust for Claiming Age
Claiming before FRA reduces your benefit by up to 30%. Claiming after FRA adds delayed retirement credits of 8% per year, up to age 70. This gives your final monthly payment.
2024 PIA Bend Points — Your AIME Breakdown
The SSA replaces a higher percentage of pre-retirement earnings for low earners and a lower percentage for high earners. This progressivity is built into the formula through three bend points. The bar below shows how your AIME is distributed across these brackets.
- Calculations use 2024 bend points ($1,174 and $7,078) and the 2024 taxable maximum of $168,600.
- Past earnings are projected backward using your specified income growth rate; future earnings are projected forward at the same rate.
- Lifetime benefits assume benefits are collected from your claiming age until average life expectancy (≈84 male, ≈87 female). Actual longevity varies.
- This tool does not account for COLA adjustments, spousal benefits, survivor benefits, disability, or future changes to SSA law.
- Bend points and the taxable maximum are adjusted annually for national wage growth, so future benefits in nominal dollars will be higher than shown.
